The R&D project of large capacity superconducting transformer for high speed trains has been approved

The technology of vehicle transformer for high speed trains in China will have a major breakthrough. Under the support of the national key research and development plan, "strategic international scientific and technological innovation cooperation", the project of "research and development of large capacity superconducting transformer for high speed trains" (serial number 2016YFE0201200) has been approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology and officially established. The parties and related leaders held a kick-off meeting for project in Beijing Jiaotong University in October 30, 2017.

The project led by the Beijing Jiaotong University, together with Innova Superconductor Technology Co., Ltd. (InnoST), Zhuzhou Lince Group Co.,Ltd. (Lince), Zhuzhou Times New Material Technology Co., Ltd. (TMT), Beihang University to make the China R&D team, and in cooperation with Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. The aim of the project is to complete a high temperature superconducting traction transformer prototype with rated capacity 6.6MVA. The project budget is 60 million 600 thousand yuan. The state subsidy is 23 million 800 thousand yuan, and the remaining is matched by the three companies from the team. InnoST provides 16 million 192 thousand yuan (about 44%), Lince provide 11 million 408 thousand yuan (about 31%), and  TMT provides 9 million 200 thousand yuan (about 25%). The parties will share the intellectual property formed in preject, and jointly promote the industrialization development of superconducting transformer.

The transformer is an important electrical equipment. It converts the alternating current from one voltage to another voltage with the same frequency throughing electromagnetic induction. In the high speed railway system, the transformer imports the energy from the overhead line into the core of the electronics components, such as driving motor. The efficiency and reliability of the transformer has very important significance to the total energy efficiency, speed, driving safety and other key indicators. Therefore, the development of high performance vehicle transformer plays an important role in promoting the technical level of rail transportation and the development of efficient, safe rail transportation.

The aim of the project is to complete a high temperature superconducting traction transformer prototype with rated capacity 6.6MVA. The voltage of the primary side input is 25kV, the standard rail transit supply voltage, and the secondary side output is compatible with the "Renaissance" China standard EMU. There are 4 channels, and the rated current of each channel is up to 870A. The prototype is all made of high temperature superconducting material, and the total efficiency is expected to be as high as 99%, while the total mass is only about 3 tons. Compared with the conventional transformer, it has the advantages of high efficiency, light weight, small size, long service life, no fire hazard, no pollution and other advantages.

 

InnoST will undertake to core task, the development of all the superconducting wires and  superconducting winding coils. InnoST is a holding subsidiary of BENEFO (stock code: 600468), is a leader in the High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) industry in China, with annual 300 kilometers production capacity of BSCCO high temperature superconducting wires. The critical current of the BSCCO wire of InnoST is up to 170A in liquid nitrogen, self field, ranking second in the world.
