InnoST Received Important National High-Tech R&D Program (863 Program) Contract

An InnoST’s project, which is named “high performance, Low cost manufacture technology of Bi-2223 wires”, received the first phase fund of ¥3.5 million from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of China. The total amount of the fund will be ¥5 million. The important project belongs to the 863 program which includes the most important scientific projects in China. The InnoST’s project is one of the first batch of 863 projects over the next 5 years. 


High temperature superconductor materials were found in 1980’s. As the unique mass industrial HTS material, Bi-2223 wires are made by the typical Oxide Powder In Tube (OPIT) method. Up to now, the price of the commercially available Bi-2223 superconducting wires is still expensive that is about $150/kA-m for power industrial applications such as HTS cable and others.


In this project, InnoST will be continuously devoted to enhance the performance-price ratio by a series of methods, such as increasing the Ic properties, improving the production yield and realizing the industrialization of superconducting precursor powder. As the target of this InnoST project, InnoST will industrialize the Bi-2223 wire mass production at the performance 150A with the production cost low than $60/kA-m before the end of 2009.
