The project about Superconducting FCL has been support by The National High Technology Research and Development Program of China

The National High-Tech R&D Program of China (863 Program) has supported the project of Development of 220kV/800A Superconducting FCL with fund of 5 million YUAN. The project is applied by InnoPower Superconducting Cable Co., Ltd. InnoST will develop and offer the high current density Ag alloy sheathed Bi-2223 wire for this project.


Background information on HTS FCL:
Fault current limiters (FCLs) can be considered as key elements in power systems using high temperature superconductors. It is the desire of most power system utilities to maximize transferred power and to reduce system losses to a minimum in their systems. These goals could be achieved if the system impedance could be reduced. However, such measures would increase short-circuit currents enormously and endanger equipment and people's safety. This problem could be circumvented by the installation of an FCL. In particular, FCL provides increased safety, reliability, power quality, and it is compatible with existing protection devices.
Conventional copper-based FCLs can cause voltage drop in the electrical system by adding reactance to the system. This forces the utility to add capacitance to the system to counter-balance the reactive element. Comparing with conventional FCL , a HTS FCL has no reactance and is passive during non-fault conditions. No capacitive correction is needed and more efficient can be achieved. At the same time, utilities can reduce or eliminate the cost of circuit breakers and fuses by installing HTS FCL.
