Science plan 863 to focus on pioneering reaserch

The science plan launched in March, 1986 -- known as Plan 863 -- includes the most important scientific projects in China. 

The Ministry of Science and Technology has just announced the first batch of 863 research projects over the next 5 years. The aggregate budget for these projects is 6 billion yuan. 

40 percent of the aggregate budget will go to pioneering research into areas such as super conductivity and new computation modules. This kind of research constitutes a major shift from the past. The budget for agricultural sciences takes up another lion's share, amounting to 1.4 billion yuan. 

The rest of the plan includes research in information technology, automation, resources, and the environment
