Author: admin / 2006-09-01

Strong commitment to foster education and R&D cooperation with China reaffirmed

Siemens today donated an Ion Beam Assisted Deposition (IBAD), a major world-class R&D equipment used in high-temperature superconducting technology research, to Tsinghua University. It is the only IBAD equipment in China to date. This equipment will not only facilitate Tsinghua University’s research and further consolidate its leadership position in this important field, but will also advance a joint research program between Siemens and Tsinghua University in this area. Tsinghua University Vice-President Chen Jining and Siemens China President and CEO Dr. Richard Hausmann attended the donation ceremony, as well as the head of Tsinghua R&D Center Mr. Wang Zanji, and Siemens China Corporate Technology Head Dr. Arding Hsu.

Novel high-temperature superconducting technology is a major focus in China’s plans for science and technology development, and is listed in the widely known National High-Tech R&D Program, the “863 Plan”. Tsinghua is a key partner in this field. The IBAD Siemens donated to Tsinghua is a key equipment to develop novel high-temperature superconducting wires for a wide variety of applications like for example in electricity transmission, communication and healthcare. The IBAD was built by Siemens Corporate Technology top researchers in Germany, and it took three years and substantial investment to complete.

In the field of superconductivity, Siemens Corporate Technology already cooperates with Tsinghua University for over four years and the donation of the IBAD aims to further fortify the cooperation to successfully develop applicable superconducting wires with lower cost and improved performances.

At the donation ceremony, Tsinghua University Vice-President Chen Jining voiced his belief that “this IBAD equipment will strongly promote the research work in Tsinghua and help the university to keep its leading position in developing novel high-temperature superconducting materials through new methods.”

Dr. Richard Hausmann, President and CEO of Siemens China, emphasized that, “As a global innovation leader, Siemens is proud to partner with Tsinghua University, China’s leading player in the field of superconductivity research. We are pleased that our cooperation project is listed as a key project by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and we are committed to progress the project to create win-win results for both parties.”

The IBAD equipment can also be used to advance research and development of superconducting tapes in China, adding impetus for home-grown technology innovation in the fields of energy, power and healthcare.

As one of the largest foreign investors in China, Siemens strongly supports the development of education in China and actively engages in local R&D projects covering all Siemens’ business areas. Today’s donation demonstrates Siemens’ contribution to China’s independent innovation strategy and underlines Siemens commitment to China as a responsible and good corporate citizen.
